God Wants You Humble (Like Jesus)

November 20, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

Philippians 2:3-8 NLT

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Devotional:

Humility is at the very heart of God’s plan for our lives. In Philippians 2, we are reminded of the ultimate example of humility: Jesus Christ. Even though Jesus was fully God, He did not hold tightly to His divine privileges. Instead, He willingly set them aside to serve, love, and save humanity.

Think about that for a moment. The Creator of the universe chose to enter His creation not as a king or a ruler but as a servant. He washed His disciples' feet, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ultimately laid down His life on the cross for you and me.

Jesus’ humility wasn’t weakness—it was strength under control. It was the deliberate choice to prioritize others above Himself and to obey God fully, even when it led to suffering and death.

Humility is at the heart of Jesus’ life and ministry. True humility is not just about thinking less of ourselves but about thinking of ourselves less. Jesus' humility was expressed in His willingness to serve, surrender His rights, and prioritize God's will above all else.

When God humbles us, it’s not out of cruelty but out of love and a desire to shape our hearts into the image of Christ. Pride distances us from God, but humility draws us closer. We experience God’s grace through humility and recognize our dependence on Him.

Journal:

In your journal, write down what areas of your life you struggle with pride or self-reliance. How might those areas be keeping you from fully trusting God? Reflect on how Jesus served others selflessly. How can you follow His example in your relationships, work, or ministry?

Training:

Father,

Thank You for the example of humility You gave us in Jesus Christ. Help me to have the same attitude of selflessness and obedience that He displayed. Teach me to think of others above myself, to serve with joy, and to trust You with the outcome. Remove pride from my heart and replace it with a spirit of humility that reflects Your love to the world.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  • Seek to Serve: Ask God to show you how to serve others in your family, workplace, and community. Humility means putting others’ needs ahead of your own, just as Jesus did.

  • Let Go of Pride: Pride often disguises itself in comparison, competition, or the need for recognition. True humility finds joy in lifting others up and trusting God for His timing and rewards.

  • Follow Christ’s Example: Remember that Jesus’ humility was rooted in obedience to God. When you humble yourself before Him, you align your heart with His will.
