Money is a Tool, Not a Master
February 21, 2025
Hey Clawson Family!
Song:
Scripture:
Matthew 6:24 (NLT)
“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”
Devotional:
Money is a powerful resource, but it was never meant to be our ruler. It is a tool given to us by God to steward wisely, not a master that demands our devotion. When money becomes our focus, it can lead to anxiety, greed, and misplaced priorities. But when we see it as a tool for God's purposes, it can be used to bless others, support our families, and advance His kingdom.
Jesus warns us in Matthew 6:24 that we cannot serve both God and money. This doesn’t mean that having money is wrong, but it does mean that our hearts should not be controlled by it. The love of money can lead us away from faith, but when we trust God as our provider, we can use money without being enslaved by it.
The key is in how we handle our financial resources. Are we using them to serve God and others, or are we allowing money to dictate our decisions, emotions, and priorities?
Money is neither good nor evil—it’s simply a tool. The danger comes when money takes the place of God in our hearts. If we chase wealth, we risk becoming enslaved to it. But if we use money as a tool to build God’s kingdom, bless others, and steward wisely, we find true financial freedom. The key is keeping our hearts focused on God, not on money.
Journal:
Answer the following questions in your journal
Do I see money as a tool to serve God's purposes, or does it control my decisions and worries?
How can I be a better steward of my finances to honor God?
Am I using my money to bless others, or am I clinging to it out of fear?
Training:
This week, evaluate how you use money. Set aside time to pray over your finances, create a plan for generosity, and ensure your heart remains focused on serving God above all else.
Jesus, I want You to be my only Master. Teach me to trust in You for my needs and to use my finances for Your glory. Thank You for providing for my needs. Help me to see money as a tool, not a master. Give me wisdom to use my finances for Your glory and to trust You as my provider. May I never place my hope in wealth but in You alone. Teach me to be generous, faithful, and content in all circumstances. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
