Avoid Foolish Arguments and Pursue Unity

November 11, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

Titus 3:9 New Living Translation

9 Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees[a] or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These things are useless and a waste of time.

Devotional:

Do you think that we have an issue in the American Church with arguing about useless things and a waste of time instead of spending our time building relationships with people to grow the Kingdom of God?

Church people are so good at arguing with each other! They argue about how we should look, the interpretation of scriptures, how to baptize, the trinity, the Holy Spirit, and politics.

Arguing about these things only divides the church! We can actually agree to disagree, and both can still love Jesus and build the church of Jesus. But we can’t do that if being right is more important than reaching people.

I do think there is a time to stand up and argue, and I believe if Paul was writing to us, he would say If you are going to argue about something, argue the case for Christ. He does say if you are going to boast about anything, boast about the Lord.

I also think there is a place for healthy discussion. If we can have a healthy discussion, then we will grow, and that discussion will unite us instead of divide us.

Unhealthy discussions and arguments usually divide us, and I believe that is why Paul was so passionate about telling them to stop arguing about useless things.

Instead, we should focus on building relationships and expanding God's Kingdom. Let’s prioritize love over the need to be correct, remembering that our ultimate goal is to reflect Christ to others.

Journal:

In your journal, answer the following questions:

What steps can you take to ensure that our discussions within the church remain healthy and constructive rather than divisive?

How can agreeing to disagree while still loving Jesus and building the church look like in practical terms?

Why do you think being right is sometimes prioritized over reaching people, and how can we shift our focus?

Training:

This week, I encourage you to lead by example, showing respect and kindness even when disagreeing. Pray for unity and seek opportunities to bridge gaps between differing viewpoints, always pointing back to your shared foundation in Christ.
