Desiring God’s Presence

December 9, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" – Psalm 42:1-2 (NIV)

Devotional:

There’s something profoundly life-changing about yearning for God’s presence. The psalmist in this verse compares their desire for God to a deer longing for water—a deep, unrelenting need for something essential to survival. Just as water sustains life, the presence of God sustains the soul. But wanting His presence isn’t automatic; it’s a hunger we cultivate by recognizing our dependence on Him.

Sometimes, life gets busy or challenging, and we become preoccupied with solving problems on our own. We forget that God’s presence is not just a luxury but the foundation for our strength, peace, and joy. Without Him, even the most fulfilling experiences fall short.

To truly desire God’s presence, we must first recognize its value. His presence brings clarity in confusion, comfort in pain, and strength in weakness. It is where we find our true identity and purpose. When we begin to grasp how essential He is, our hearts naturally cry out for more of Him.

The beautiful thing about wanting God’s presence is that He promises to meet us in that longing. James 4:8 reminds us, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” God doesn’t withhold Himself from those who earnestly seek Him. Instead, He delights in pouring out His love, wisdom, and guidance when we come to Him with open hearts.

Journal:

In your journal, take a moment to pause and reflect on your need for God’s presence. What areas of your life feel dry and weary? Invite Him into those spaces.

Training:

Spend intentional time in God’s presence this week. Set aside a few minutes each day to pray, worship, or read His Word. As you do, invite Him to fill your heart and transform your life.

Lord,

I thank You for Your promise to draw near to me as I draw near to You. I confess that I sometimes get distracted and forget how much I  my heart a deep desire for more of You. Let me never settle for less than the fullness of life that comes from walking closely with You.

In Jesus Name, Amen.
