Everyone Struggles with Idols
December 4, 2024
Hey Clawson Family!
Song:
Scripture:
1 John 5:21
21 Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.
1 Corinthians 1:12
12 Some of you are saying, “I am a follower of Paul.” Others are saying, “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Peter,[a]” or “I follow only Christ.”
Devotional:
We all struggle with idols because our hearts are naturally inclined to elevate something or someone to the level of ultimate importance. Even good things—family, careers, health, or hobbies—can become idols when we prioritize them above our relationship with God.
For some, it might be the pursuit of success, while for others, it could be relationships, money, social media, or even personal achievements. These idols promise satisfaction but ultimately leave us feeling empty because they cannot fulfill the deep longing in our souls that only God can satisfy.
The Bible reminds us that God is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14). This is not a petty jealousy but a holy and righteous desire for our undivided devotion. He knows that when we chase idols, we distance ourselves from His life-giving presence.
In His love, God calls us to recognize our idols, repent, and surrender them to Him. Like the Apostle John’s admonition, we are to actively guard our hearts and keep ourselves from idols by continually prioritizing God in every area of our lives.
Breaking Free from Idols
1. Confession: Admit your struggle with idols to God. Be honest about the things that have taken His place in your life.
• “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts” (Psalm 139:23).
2. Reordering Priorities: Seek to put God first in your time, decisions, and daily habits.
• “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).
3. Trusting God Fully: Surrender your fears, desires, and insecurities to God, trusting that He is sufficient to meet your needs.
• “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
4. Accountability: Surround yourself with a community of believers who will encourage you to stay focused on Christ and resist idolatry.
Journal:
We often elevate people, achievements, or even good things—like ministry—to positions only God should hold. Recognizing this struggle is the first step to breaking free. In your journal, write down what areas in your life have become misplaced sources of trust or significance.
Training:
Heavenly Father,
We confess that our hearts are often drawn to idols—things that cannot satisfy or sustain us. Forgive us for placing other things above You. Help us to recognize and surrender these idols, and teach us to seek You above all else. Fill our hearts with Your presence and remind us that only You are worthy of our worship.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
