Fixing My Mind on What is Good
December 25, 2024
Merry Christmas Clawson family!
Song:
Scripture:
“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (Philippians 4:8)
Devotional:
In the hustle of daily life, it’s easy for our minds to get overwhelmed with worries, negativity, and distractions. Yet, God invites us to a higher way of thinking—a way that directs our hearts and minds toward what is good, pure, and uplifting. Fixing our minds on what is good isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a spiritual discipline that transforms our perspective and deepens our faith.
Our thoughts shape our attitudes and actions. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to guard our hearts because everything we do flows from it. When we allow negative or ungodly thoughts to linger, they can erode our joy and peace. But when we intentionally focus on the goodness of God and His promises, our minds become a place of hope and strength.
Paul’s exhortation in Philippians 4:8 is a call to focus on what aligns with God’s truth. It doesn’t mean ignoring life’s challenges or pretending pain doesn’t exist, but it’s about choosing to see situations through the lens of faith.
For example:
• When fear rises, fix your mind on God’s faithfulness (Psalm 34:4)
• When negativity abounds, think about the beauty of creation and the goodness of God’s works (Psalm 19:1).
• When doubt creeps in, remember God’s unfailing promises (Joshua 21:45).
When you fix your mind on what is good, you’ll experience peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7). This peace guards your heart and equips you to face life’s difficulties with strength and resilience. You’ll also find yourself becoming a light to others, radiating God’s goodness in your words and actions.
Fixing our minds on what is good doesn’t happen by accident—it’s an intentional act of faith. May we embrace this discipline daily and watch how God’s goodness transforms our lives.
What you feed your mind determines your emotional and spiritual health. Focusing on negativity or worldly distractions leads to a restless heart. Instead, choose to meditate on God’s goodness and His promises. Let your thoughts dwell on things that bring peace, not chaos.
Journal:
In your journal, Create a list of “true, honorable, and lovely” things in your life today. Thank God for these blessings and let them guide your thoughts.
Training:
Here are some ways to train your thoughts:
• Start your day with Scripture: Allow God’s Word to shape your thoughts before the world does.
• Practice gratitude: Make it a habit to thank God for the blessings, big and small, in your life.
• Filter what you consume: Guard what you read, watch, and listen to, ensuring it reflects God’s goodness.
• Meditate on God’s character: Reflect on His love, mercy, and power to shift your focus from problems to His presence.
Lord, help me to fix my mind on what is good, pure, and praiseworthy. When negativity and distractions try to pull me away, remind me of Your truth and Your promises. Transform my thoughts so that they align with Your Word and reflect Your glory. Amen.
