How do I Discipline my Children?
May 22, 2024
Hey Clawson Family!
Song:
Scripture:
Proverbs 23:13 New Living Translation
13 Don’t fail to discipline your children. The rod of punishment won’t kill them.
Hebrews 12:6 New Living Translation
6 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”[a]
Proverbs 13:24 New Living Translation
24 Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.
Devotional:
We are too worried about hurting our kid's feelings, we are too worried about being their friend, and we are too worried about how other people are going to look at us when we discipline our kids.
What we need to be worried about is who they are going to become if their feelings, their friendship, and others are dictating the discipline of our children and not the bible. It’s funny because our culture says if you use the rod of discipline on your kids you hate them, but the bible says if you don’t you hate them. If we don’t discipline our kids then instead of them having consequences for their actions now, eventually they are going to be paying the consequences for your inactions.
The goal of discipline is for your children to feel discomfort of some type. If it doesn’t hurt in some way then it is not working. You actually want them to regret what they did, and think twice before doing it again. If not then the discipline is not working. This doesn’t have to be spanking, not all discipline looks the same.
What is important is that you are disciplining them. One of everyone's biggest pet peeves is being around a parent who won't discipline their child. You aren’t doing them any favors, you are hurting them in the long run. As much as it sucks that is in your job description as a parent.
Journal:
In your journals write What is God showing you about discipline. What does God need to change in you for you to better discipline your children?
Training:
Father,
Thank You for the gift of my children. Help me to discipline them in a way that builds character, teaches them godliness and leaves no regrets.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
