Iron Sharpens Iron

December 19, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

Proverbs 27:17—“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Devotional:

In the ancient world, iron tools were essential for survival. Blacksmiths carefully hammered, heated, and chiseled blades to keep them honed and useful. But one piece of iron alone could do little for itself; it needed the friction and strength of another iron piece to refine its cutting edge. In a similar way, God places people in our lives to help shape and sharpen us, spiritually and personally.

We often think growth is a solitary journey—personal devotions, private prayers, one-on-one time with God. While these private disciplines are vital, we cannot dismiss God’s design for community. Other believers challenge our rough edges, refine our character, and highlight our blind spots. A spiritually mature friend may ask tough questions that expose areas of pride. A caring mentor might encourage faith-based risk-taking when complacency sets in. A brother or sister in Christ may patiently remind us of God’s promises when we’re prone to doubt.

Being “sharpened” is not always comfortable. The process might generate sparks or some heat as misunderstandings come to light or old habits are confronted. But these moments of tension are purposeful if we approach them with humility and teachability. Healthy relationships—grounded in love, truth, and a shared desire to reflect Christ—are God’s gift to keep our edges keen and our hearts aligned with His will.

What does it mean for you to sharpen someone else? It could be a word of encouragement at just the right moment, a prayer for healing and guidance, a well-timed challenge to step out in faith, or gentle but firm accountability when a friend is drifting. At times, you’ll be the one holding the blade for another, steadying them with godly wisdom. At other times, they’ll hold the blade for you, helping you reclaim your edge.

Journal:

In your journal, reflect on the relationships in your life that have helped refine you. Take a moment today to thank God for a friend, mentor, or spiritual sibling who has sharpened you. Then, ask the Lord to show you someone in your community who needs your encouragement or guidance.

Training:

Consider reaching out with a phone call, a meaningful text, or an invitation to pray together. By fostering these iron-sharpening-iron relationships, we each grow stronger and more effective as instruments in God’s hands.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the people You have placed in my life to shape me into the likeness of Christ. Help me to be grateful for their influence, even when it’s uncomfortable. Grant me the humility to receive their sharpening, and the courage to offer my own encouragement and truth to others. Keep our relationships rooted in love and led by Your Holy Spirit.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
