Jesus can help!

March 7, 2024

Hey Clawson Family,

Song:

Scripture:

Mark 10:46-52

46 Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting beside the road. 47 When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

48 “Be quiet!” many of the people yelled at him.

But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, “Tell him to come here.”

So they called the blind man. “Cheer up,” they said. “Come on, he’s calling you!” 50 Bartimaeus threw aside his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.

51  “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked.

“My Rabbi,” the blind man said, “I want to see!”

52 And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.

1 Peter 3:15 NLT

Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.

Philippians 4:19 NLT

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Devotion:

Evangelism would be much easier if people knew that they were spiritually lost and separated from God. Unfortunately, most of the people we will share Jesus with aren’t asking, “How can Jesus save me?” They are asking, “How can Jesus help me?”

Their physical needs are more important to them than their spiritual needs.

In Mark 10 Jesus had an encounter with a man who needed spiritual healing, but he was more concerned with his physical need, so that is where Jesus began.

Bartimaeus was blind and seeking healing, and he fought for Jesus’ attention. He wasn’t thinking about eternity, he was thinking about that fact that he was blind and wanted to see!

So Jesus healed him and he began to see But that healing caused him to choose to follow Jesus down the road.

How many people do we see every day who are fixated on their current emergency? It might be financial, relational, or physical. They are  trapped in their challenges, and it seems overwhelming. When everyday life seems overwhelming, sometimes spiritual things are not a priority to someone who is drowning in their current circumstances.

So we step in, and instead of starting with, “Follow Him,” we start with, “What are you going through?” Then we suggest Jesus as the answer.

One of the beautiful things about Jesus is that He is not a one-trick pony. There is much more to Him after salvation. He is not only the door to Heaven; He is the one who understands and can help us through every challenge we face while we are on the earth. When you introduce your friend to Jesus, you are introducing them to the answer to their current crisis (no matter what it is). When they experience Him in that area of their life, they will be more likely to choose to, “Follow Jesus along the road” (Mark 10:52).

Journal:

In your journal today ask God for the strength to inspire those around you to follow christ. To be an example of how Jesus is the answer to all of their problems.

Training:

Ask God to equip you with the right words, tools and resources to help those in your circle of influence with their physical needs  so that you can reach their spiritual needs.
