It’s Time to Grow Up
January 27, 2025
Hey Clawson Family!
Song:
Scripture:
Hebrews 5:12-14
In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
1 Corinthians 13:11 (NLT)
When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.
Devotional:
Scripture: Growth is a natural part of life. Just as we expect children to grow physically, emotionally, and mentally, God expects His children to grow spiritually. However, spiritual maturity doesn’t happen automatically. It requires intentional effort, discipline, and a desire to deepen your relationship with God.
The author of Hebrews challenges believers who have remained spiritually immature. By this time, they should have been teaching others and applying the deeper truths of the Word. Instead, they were still dependent on the “milk” of basic teachings. It was time for them to grow up.
In our walk with Christ, there comes a time when we must move beyond the basics. Yes, foundational truths like salvation, faith, and grace are vital, but God calls us to more. He wants us to pursue deeper understanding, develop discernment, and live out His Word in our daily lives.
Signs It’s Time to Grow Up:
1. Spiritual Dependency: Are you still reliant on others to feed you spiritually? It’s time to develop your own habits of prayer, Bible study, and worship.
2. Lack of Discernment: Can you distinguish truth from falsehood? Maturity comes through constant exposure to God’s Word.
3. Failure to Apply Truth: Are you hearing the Word but not living it? Mature believers are doers of the Word (James 1:22).
How to Grow:
1. Consume Solid Food: Move beyond surface-level Bible reading. Study God’s Word deeply and meditate on it.
2. Practice Spiritual Disciplines: Consistently pray, fast, worship, and serve others. Growth requires discipline.
3. Embrace Challenges: Trials and tests are opportunities to grow in character and faith. Don’t run from them; let God refine you.
4. Teach Others: Share what you’ve learned with others. Teaching deepens your own understanding.
Growing up spiritually doesn’t mean perfection; it means progress. It’s about becoming more like Christ every day, learning from mistakes, and pressing forward. God desires a mature relationship with you, one where you can handle life’s challenges with His wisdom and strength.
Are you growing spiritually, or have you been stuck in the same place? What steps can you take today to pursue maturity in Christ?
Spiritual maturity is a journey, not an overnight transformation. Growing up in faith doesn’t mean we lose the childlike wonder or trust Jesus spoke about in Matthew 18:3, but it does mean putting away childish habits. Ask yourself: Am I still holding onto immature attitudes or behaviors? In what ways can I take responsibility for my growth today? Maturity in faith often starts when we examine what we are feeding our hearts and minds.
Journal:
In your journal, Identify one “childish thing” in your life—whether it’s a habit, mindset, or reaction—and make a plan to let it go. Pray and ask God to help you replace it with spiritual maturity.
Training:
Lord, thank You for calling me to grow in You. Help me move beyond the basics and seek a deeper relationship with You. Give me the desire to study Your Word, discern truth, and live a life that reflects Your glory. Mature me in my faith so I can walk in Your purpose and be a blessing to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
