Prioritizing What is Important Over What is Urgent

March 5, 2025

Hey Clawson Family

Song:

Scripture:

Ephesians 5:15-16 (NLT) – "So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days."

Luke 10:41-42 (ESV) - "But the Lord said to him, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.’"

Devotional:

In our fast-paced world, the urgent demands of everyday life often scream for our attention. The phone rings, emails pile up, and tasks seem to multiply by the minute. These urgent matters—whether work deadlines, appointments, or even well-meaning distractions—can overwhelm us, leaving us feeling anxious and scattered.

However, in the midst of the busyness, Jesus teaches us a crucial lesson about what truly matters. In the story of Martha and Mary, Martha becomes consumed with the demands of serving and making everything perfect, while Mary chooses to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to His teaching. Jesus gently rebukes Martha, pointing out that while her concerns were urgent, they were not the most important. Mary, on the other hand, had prioritized what was truly significant: spending time with Jesus and learning from Him.

Prioritizing the Important Over the Urgent: It’s easy to fall into the trap of responding to what’s urgent because it feels pressing. But often, what is urgent is not necessarily aligned with what is important for our well-being, spiritual growth, or long-term happiness. Urgent tasks demand immediate attention, but important tasks—like spending quality time with loved ones, investing in spiritual practices, and nurturing relationships—are the foundation of a fulfilling life.

Jesus reminds us that there is a better way. When we focus on the important—on what will build us up spiritually, emotionally, and relationally—we align ourselves with God's priorities. It’s not about neglecting the urgent tasks altogether, but about putting them in their proper place, allowing space for what truly sustains us.

Application:

  1. Take Time to Reflect: Set aside a moment to evaluate the areas of your life that demand your attention. Are there urgent tasks that are taking your focus away from what is truly important?

  2. Set Boundaries: Just like Jesus made time for prayer and solitude despite the demands on His time, we too must set boundaries to protect our time with God, family, and our own well-being.

  3. Make Room for What Lasts: In the midst of life’s hustle, intentionally create time for the things that will last—relationships, spiritual growth, and acts of service that align with God’s purpose for your life.

Let us not be caught up in the noise of urgent demands but seek to make time for what is truly important. By doing so, we will live more purposeful, peaceful, and fulfilling lives, rooted in the love and guidance of God.

Journal Questions:

  1. What are some urgent tasks that often distract you from important things?

  2. How do you currently decide what to focus on each day?

  3. How can you create space for God and His priorities in your daily schedule?

Training:

Identify one urgent but less important activity that you tend to prioritize over truly important things (like prayer, family, or rest). Make a commitment today to replace that time with something meaningful.

God, give me discernment to know the difference between what is important and what is simply urgent. Help me to set boundaries with my time so that I can prioritize You, my family, and my calling. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
