Sanctification: A Daily Journey of Transformation

December 12, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

– 1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)

Devotional:

Sanctification is the process by which God sets us apart for His purpose and transforms us into the likeness of Christ. Unlike justification, which happens instantaneously when we believe in Jesus, sanctification is a lifelong journey that requires daily surrender, faith, and obedience.

The apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 that sanctification touches every part of our being—spirit, soul, and body. It is a holistic process where God works in us, through us, and around us to shape us into vessels that reflect His holiness.

What Sanctification Is Not:

• It is not about achieving perfection through our own strength.

• It is not a list of rules to follow.

• It is not immediate or without challenges.

What Sanctification Is:

1. God’s Work in Us:

Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Sanctification is God’s work, but it requires our cooperation.

2. A Daily Process:

Jesus prayed in John 17:17, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” This shows us that sanctification is ongoing. As we immerse ourselves in God’s Word and prayer, the Holy Spirit transforms us.

3. A Call to Holiness:

In 1 Peter 1:16, we are commanded, “Be holy, because I am holy.” While this may feel daunting, holiness is not about being flawless but being set apart for God’s purposes.

Sanctification can feel overwhelming, but remember this promise: “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6). God is faithful to finish what He starts. Your role is to remain yielded, trusting Him every step of the way.

Journal:

In your journal, answer the following questions:

1. How have you seen God working to sanctify you in your life recently?

2. What Scriptures remind you of God’s promise to complete the work He began in you?

3. Are there areas in your life where you resist God’s transforming work? What steps can you take to surrender those areas to Him?

Training:

Lord, thank You for Your transforming work in my life. I surrender my heart, mind, and will to You today. Purify me and make me more like Jesus. Help me to walk in obedience, trust in Your process, and rely on Your Spirit. Thank You for Your faithfulness in completing the work You have started in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Practical Steps in the Journey of Sanctification:

1. Daily Surrender: Begin each day by submitting your heart, mind, and actions to God. Ask Him to guide your steps and purify your motives.

2. Abide in God’s Word: Regular Bible study and meditation allow God to renew your mind and reveal areas needing transformation.

3. Walk in Obedience: As God reveals His will, respond in faith and action. Even small acts of obedience lead to significant spiritual growth.

4. Rely on the Holy Spirit: Sanctification is not about striving but surrendering to the Spirit’s work in your life.

5. Engage in Community: Surround yourself with fellow believers who encourage, challenge, and walk with you in faith.
