Surrendering to the Lordship of Christ

January 16, 2025

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. … If you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.”(Luke 9:23–24 NLT)

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”—Romans 12:1 (NIV)

Devotional:

One of the most transformative moments in the Christian life comes when we willingly surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It’s a moment that goes beyond intellectual assent to His deity. It is an act of the heart, mind, and will—laying all that we are before Him. As Paul urges in Romans 12:1, we are to present ourselves as a living sacrifice, acknowledging Christ as King in every area of life.

The idea of Jesus’ Lordship means He has absolute authority—yet it is the authority of One who is perfectly loving and trustworthy. So often, we hold onto areas of our lives we fear to yield, whether it’s our future, relationships, finances, or personal aspirations. We forget that the same God who invites us to surrender is also the One who cares for the sparrows and clothes the lilies of the field (Matthew 6:25–34). His love isn’t oppressive; rather, it provides freedom and peace when we yield to His leading.

True surrender is ongoing. It’s not confined to a single moment, altar call, or emotional prayer. Instead, it’s a daily choice to pick up our cross and follow Him (Luke 9:23). Even when we face uncertainty or the weight of life’s challenges, surrender invites us into deeper trust. When we relinquish the pressure of trying to control every outcome, our hearts become free to delight in the Lord’s provision and guidance.

Remember that surrender does not mean passivity. It is an active posture of obedience—listening to God’s Word and responding in faith. As we follow Christ with open hands and open hearts, our devotion to Him deepens, and we discover that in losing our lives for His sake, we find the abundant life He promised (Matthew 16:25).

We often embrace Jesus as Savior but struggle to surrender to Him as Lord. Lordship means Jesus is in charge—He leads, and we follow. When we keep parts of our life off-limits from His rule, we miss out on the fullness of His peace and purpose. Though it feels risky to yield our will to God’s, it is in that act of surrender we find true freedom, discovering that His plans and His ways are always better than our own.

Journal:

In your journal answer the following questions:

  • What areas of your life do you find hardest to surrender to the Lord?

  • What steps can you take today to align your plans, decisions, and desires under Jesus’ Lordship?

Training:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus, our loving Lord and Savior. We acknowledge that every part of our lives belongs to You. Forgive us when we cling to control or pride. Help us to offer ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to You. Teach us to trust You in every circumstance and to live in full surrender to Your Perfect will.I acknowledge You are Lord over my entire life—my decisions, my desires, my relationships, and my future. Teach me to let go of control so that I can fully experience the life You promise. I trust You, Lord.

In Jesus Name, Amen
