The Mother that Prayed
May 17, 2024
Hey Clawson Family!
Song:
Scripture:
Matthew 15:21-18
The Faith of a Gentile Woman
21 Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre and Sidon.22 A Gentile[e] woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter is possessed by a demon that torments her severely.”
23 But Jesus gave her no reply, not even a word. Then his disciples urged him to send her away. “Tell her to go away,” they said. “She is bothering us with all her begging.”
24 Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep—the people of Israel.”
25 But she came and worshiped him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!”
26 Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”
27 She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”
28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.
Devotional:
When we are praying for something that we believe is the will of God, we should not give up. Keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking—that is what Jesus told us to do. In fact, when Jesus saw the great faith of a mother from Canaan who was doing this very thing, He gave her carte blanche, so to speak: “Let it be to you as you desire.”
This mother believed that what she was asking was the will of God, and she would not give up. Maybe you, like this mother, have a child who is under the devil’s influence today. He or she has rejected your influence, at least for now. It is tough, because you have raised this child in the ways of the Lord. The very thing you have prepared your child for—to become independent—has happened. My advice is, hold on. You will come through it.
Journal:
What are you hoping for when you pray? Write those in your journal and then below how you have noticed God’s goodness or His good gifts lately.
Training:
Father
There’s so much I want and need, but I’m afraid to ask because I don’t know if You’ll say “yes.” I’m scared to wait and terrified that without those things, I won’t be OK. Teach me to recognize Your goodness and presence and to hope again in You alone.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
