Using the Focus Funnel
March 6, 2025
Hey Clawson Family
Song:
Scripture:
Proverbs 16:9 (NLT) – "We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps."
Matthew 6:33 (NLT) – "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."
Devotional
In our fast-paced world, we can easily fall into the trap of being “busy” without actually being productive. We fill our schedules, run from place to place, and constantly feel like we never have enough hours in the day. Yet God calls us not only to work diligently but also to steward our time wisely. Rather than getting lost in endless tasks, He invites us to prioritize what matters most.
The Focus Funnel—eliminate, automate, delegate, concentrate, and (strategically) procrastinate—can help us do this in a way that honors the Lord:
Eliminate: Just because something is on your list doesn’t mean it needs to stay there. Ask God for wisdom to discern which tasks truly matter and which can be removed. In Luke 10:38–42, Martha was “distracted” by many tasks, while Mary chose to sit at Jesus’s feet. Sometimes, we must eliminate even good things to make space for God ’s best.
Automate: We live in an age where certain routines and processes can be streamlined—paying bills online, using reminders, setting recurring tasks. Automating tasks frees up mental energy so we can devote our best focus to the areas of greatest importance. In the same way, spiritual “automation” could look like setting aside non-negotiable times for prayer and Bible reading, ensuring they happen daily.
Delegate: We were not created to carry every burden alone. Moses had to learn to delegate responsibilities to others (Exodus 18). By inviting trusted people to share tasks, we lighten our load and allow others to use their God-given gifts.
Concentrate: After you eliminate, automate, and delegate, the work that remains is your highest-impact calling. Whether it is leading a small group, caring for family, or building a business with integrity, these are the tasks that warrant your full, prayerful attention and excellence.
Procrastinate (strategically): Contrary to popular belief, not all procrastination is harmful. When you consciously “put off” less-critical tasks, you give your best time and energy to what truly matters. The key is making sure that the tasks you delay are the ones that don’t align with your primary purpose for this season.
As we funnel our focus, let us remember the greater calling: “Seek first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33). When we use our time and gifts wisely, we reflect God’s design and bring Him glory.
Journal Questions:
What are three things you can eliminate from your daily routine?
What tasks could you automate or delegate to free up time for more important things?
How can you use your time today to invest in what truly matters?
Training:
Use the Focus Funnel today. List out your tasks and ask yourself:
Can I eliminate this?
Can I automate this?
Can I delegate this?
Do I need to concentrate on this today?
Can I procrastinate on this?
Lord, help me to be wise with my tasks and responsibilities. Show me what I need to focus on today and what I can let go of. Teach me to trust You with my time and not be consumed by unnecessary busyness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
