We are the Church
March 12, 2024
Hey Clawson Family!
Song:
Scripture:
I Corinthians 12:27-31
27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. 28 Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church:
first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages.
29 Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles? 30 Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not! 31 So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts.
But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all.
Devotion:
When we hear the word church, the first thing we think of is a building. We have this mindset that church is a place we go to on Sundays. As we get our family dressed, fight to get there early enough and get a good seat, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that we aren’t just going to church; we are the church.
Paul says that the church is the people doing whatever it takes to reach out and help others. We have a responsibility to serve and help others in need as the church. Caring for each other as well as those outside of the church is the quickest way to see Jesus change lives. For some reason when we think of the responsiblities of the church that falls only on the church staff and the leadership. But if we are the church that means if we see a need we don’t have to wait for the pastor or someone on staff to take responsibility. We are the hands and feet of Jesus and we have a responsibility as his church.
Each of us has been given skills, abilities and opportunities to serve. In Timothy’s church, for example, the women ran a widows ministry , and elders directed church affairs while others were devoted just to teaching and preaching In the Bible, church is always a reference to people, not a place. The church is a body of believers that live out the Word of God in their words and actions. YOU are the church!
Journal:
In your journal today write down how you are using your skills and abilities to be the church. Are there ways you could be more effective? If so what would that look like?
Training:
Who do you know who is going through a tough time and could use a helping hand? What’s one thing you can do to serve that person this week?
