What’s Under the Hood?

June 4, 2025

Hey Clawson Family!

Scripture:

Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

Devotional:

Like a car with a cracked frame, we can do all the right things externally and still fall apart if the foundation is off. David was still “doing the right things,” but something inside had shifted. His desire for survival may have slowly replaced his dependence on God. Motivation matters — not just what we do, but why we do it.

We often chase success, acceptance, or security, not realizing those motives have hijacked our peace and redirected our purpose. Before long, we’re running on fumes and wondering why everything feels off. It’s not just about correcting the behavior — it’s about inspecting the engine. Only God can help us get to the real “why” beneath our “what.”

Journal Questions:

  • What’s been driving my recent decisions — approval, fear, pride, purpose, or Jesus?

  • Where might my motives be misaligned?

Challenge:

Invite a trusted friend or mentor to speak into an area of your life where your motivations might be unclear. Be honest and open.

Prayer:

Lord, search me and know me. Show me the motives that need to be surrendered to You. Help me realign my heart so that what drives me is not pride or fear, but Your Spirit and Your truth.
