What's the Penalty Without the Gospel

November 5, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

Romans 5:8 New Living Translation

8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Devotional:

The second stop on the Romans Road emphasizes the unconditional love of God towards the sinner. We were unlovable, but He loved us. We were hopeless, but He gives hope. We couldn’t save ourselves, so Christ did it because He could. To me, the most powerful thing in that whole scripture is “While we were sinners.” Let me put that in context.

While we were disobeying God, going against Him, hating and hurting Him, He chose to be such a merciful God! He sent Jesus to die for us because he loved us that much.

Romans 5:8, on the road to salvation, brings Christ into the forefront and provides an opportunity to integrate Him into the good news. If it wasn’t for God sending His Son to deal with sin, we couldn’t be saved from the penalty of sin.

Journal:

Answer the following questions in your journal. Are there moments in your life when you feel unloved by God? How can Romans 5:8 encourage you during those times? Are there people you resist loving because you don’t think they deserve it? How might remembering that you don’t deserve God’s love help you love them?

Training:

Today, I challenge you to serve someone you wouldn’t usually—someone difficult in your life. Choose an act of kindness, an act of love, or an act of worship and bless someone who is difficult. Ask Jesus to guide you to the person and the service, and honor Him in this simple, but not always easy, way.
