What do I Teach My Children?

May 21, 2024

Hey Clawson Family!

Song:

Scripture:

Deuteronomy 6:5-9 New Living Translation

5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 8 Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Devotional:

Parents, future parents, what you teach your children is so important. God knew this was the case, with his people Israel in the Old testament, he gave them His law. Then in Deuteronomy He tells them what to do with the commands He has given them.

He said put them everywhere, make the commands the topic of your conversations, put them on your house, put them on your clothes, talk about them in the morning and in the evening. Why? So, that God’s will, commands, and His plan would be at the forefront of our minds and then the minds of the generations to come.

What is the most important thing you can teach your children? Teach them about Jesus, talk about what He talked about. Put it on your house, put it on your clothes, tattoo it on your skin, anywhere and everywhere that you can make the focus on Jesus and His teachings do it. Make that the topic of your conversations, teach them how to pray, how to act, how to listen to God as He leads your life, and how to walk out the plan He has for you.

These teachings are more important than anything you can teach your kids.

Journal:

When observing your life, what do your children learn about God? Write this in your journal. If you are not a parent write down what the people closest to you observe. Define where you can improve and make sure you are teaching others about Jesus.

Training:

Dear Lord,

Thank You for the children You’ve given me. Give me Your wisdom, strength and discipline in raising them to be godly men and women. Let my life be an example of loving and following You.

 In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Ways to Apply:

  • Try sharing “highs and lows.” This can be done at the dinner table, riding in the car, or during family devotions.

  • Let your children see you reading your Bible. Show them how important it is by not letting them interrupt this time.

  • In everyday conversations, share some of the things God’s teaching you.

  • Try memorizing Scripture together.
