Communion
September 5, 2024
Hey Clawson Family!
Song:
Scripture:
John 6:53-56 New Living Translation
53 So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. 54 But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 New Living Translation
23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you.[a] Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
Devotional:
Before Jesus was killed, He was teaching. Sometimes He would say some things that they did not understand at the time and it sounded super weird.
I cannot imagine how weirded out they must have been to hear you must eat my flesh and drink my blood. But it wasn’t until after the death of Jesus that they really understood the significance of what Jesus was saying. Paul explains it in 1 Corinthians 11.
First of all I want to say just like baptism, communion does not save you. You don’t take communion and then your sins are cleansed. In fact in 1 Corinthians 11 Paul tells us to examine ourselves and if we are not honoring God with our lives then we need to get ourselves right with God before we take communion. Or don’t take it.
I also want you to understand that communion is not an obligation. It is a celebration. When we take communion, we are announcing his death, we are announcing the power that came out of his death and resurrection, by faith, we are saying that we believe there is power in the blood of Jesus.
We believe that Jesus’s blood confirmed the new covenant between us and God. When Jesus said it is finished, that is what he meant. We are announcing that we believe what Isaiah said in Isaiah 53 that by his stripes we receive healing.
That because of the sacrifice of his body and blood we are able to be saved, we are able to be healed, and we are able to be made right with God. That is what we are celebrating when we receive communion. Victory over SATAN.
Journal:
In your journal today think back to where you were when you asked Jesus into your life. Where were you? What happened? What are two ways that communion is a great reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made on your behalf?
Training:
Lord Jesus,
We praise you for your sacrifice, which gives us full, eternal life with you. Please help us to live for you each day. In your grace, you have given us the greatest example of your good news by welcoming us and reminding us to remember you. Move us into a relationship with you, community, and creation.
In Jesus, Amen.
This week what is one way you can show gratitude for the gift of salvation?
