Counting Your Blessings

January 1, 2025

Hey Clawson Family! Happy New Year!

Song:

Scripture:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” (Psalm 103:2)

"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever." —Psalm 107:1 (NIV)

Devotional:

It’s easy to get caught up in life’s challenges and forget just how many blessings God showers upon us each day. We may be juggling deadlines at work, dealing with financial stresses, managing family responsibilities, or facing health concerns. Yet, in the midst of all these pressures, God’s faithfulness remains constant.

Psalm 107 is a beautiful reminder to look back and remember how the Lord has rescued, guided, and sustained us. He is always near, even when we feel distant. As we pause and reflect, we can identify countless ways He has provided for us—through kind words from a friend, unexpected financial provision, answered prayers, loving family relationships, or simply the peace in our hearts when life gets overwhelming.

When we practice gratitude—actively counting and naming our blessings—it shifts our perspective. Where anxiety tries to take root, gratitude plants seeds of hope. Where discouragement tries to settle, thanksgiving sparks joy. We begin to see our circumstances, not as overwhelming obstacles, but as opportunities to trust and experience God’s goodness afresh.

Whether you’re experiencing abundance or struggling through a season of want, deliberately counting your blessings deepens your awareness of God’s presence. It reminds you that you are cherished, provided for, and never abandoned. Remember: God’s love endures forever, and His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23). Each day is a new opportunity to receive and acknowledge the kindness of God.

As you make it a habit to count your blessings, you’ll discover a deeper trust in the Lord and renewed joy in every season of life. Let gratitude be your daily practice and watch how God’s goodness becomes clearer and clearer with each passing day.

Journal:

Make a list of the blessings you experienced over the past year—big and small. Consider relationships, health, work, spiritual growth, and moments of joy. Take a moment to dwell on each blessing and thank God specifically for it. Let this reflection fill your heart with gratitude and awe for all He has done.

Training:

Practical steps:

  1. Make a Gratitude List: Take a few moments each day—maybe first thing in the morning or before you go to bed—to list three things you are grateful for. These can be big (like a job promotion) or small (like a warm meal or a comforting chat with a friend).

  2. Share Your Testimony: Speak openly with friends or family about God’s goodness. Testimonies remind us of His constant involvement in our daily lives and can encourage others to recognize their own blessings.

  3. Practice “Thank-You” Prayers: Rather than rushing into prayer requests, start your prayer time by expressing gratitude. Thank God for specific blessings, help you received, and promises in Scripture.

  4. Serve Others: Serving can be a tangible expression of gratitude. When you have been blessed, look for ways to bless others in return—through acts of kindness, volunteering, or charitable giving.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your endless love and the countless blessings You pour over us each day. Help us to be more mindful of the many ways You provide, guide, and comfort us. Teach us to replace worry with gratitude, and discouragement with praise. May our hearts overflow with thanksgiving, and may we be quick to share Your goodness with the world around us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
